About User Profile Verifications
This post gives an overview of what Profile Verifications are, how you give someone a verification reference, and how you can make a request for someone to give you a verification reference.
What are Profile Verifications?
Profile Verifications are different from email address verifications (a process intended to minimize the number of spambots that attempt to register on Create Climate Justice Net).
Profile Verifications are like character references. They are intended to help build trust among users and a sense of community on Create Climate Justice Net (CCJnet). For example, if another CCJnet user emails you directly and their profile is full of information and profile verifications, you may be more likely to respond to their message than if they only have a bare-bones profile with zero profile verifications.
When any new member joins CCJnet, the profile page states they have an “Unverified Profile,” and includes an orange button inviting others to verify their profile.
When an account is verified, a green box appears around the member’s photo and the words “Verified Profile” appear. Only one verification reference is needed for someone’s profile to become a “Verified Profile”.
To view the verification testimony of another CCJnet member, or for yourself, click the word “Verifications” next to the word “About” at the top of the person’s profile page. (see picture example to the right).
This will take you to a list of all the profile verification references that this user has received (see picture example below).
How to Give a Profile Verification
Each user has an orange button underneath their name and photo on their profile page, and clicking this button opens a window with a text box where you can provide a reference for them. You don’t see this button when you view your own profile because you are not able to give yourself a verification reference. However, other people see an orange button on your profile.
NOTE: Verification references cannot be edited or deleted once they are posted, and you can only give one reference per user — so make it count and check your work before clicking the “Submit” button!
Write a reference that includes information such as how you know this person, how long you’ve known them, what you appreciate about them, what their work for climate justice focuses on, and why you think other CCJnet users should feel good about working with them.
You may receive email requests from other CCJnet users to verify their profile; these emails will provide you with a quick link to this person’s profile page. See below for information about how to send profile verification requests to people you know.
How to Request a Profile Verification
You can make a request to another user to give you a profile verification reference by doing the following:
1) Try to find an account of someone who you know in some capacity by searching through the Members Directory or the Members list of groups you are a part of.
2) Once you find someone, click on their name to go to their profile page.
3) Click the orange button in the top-right corner of their profile page that allows you to send them an email.
4) Fill out the pop-up form to write a message to them requesting a reference (a message header and body of text are required), and click the checkbox towards the end of the form next to the words “Include a link to verify my profile”.
5) Click the blue “Submit” button at the bottom of the form.
This will send this person an email request to verify your profile, with a direct link to your profile page. It only takes one reference to have a “Verified Profile”, however there is no limit to how many verification references a person can have — the more, the merrier!
